Parks Half Marathon continues the tradition of success starting with the Marathon in the Parks for competitive runners and for the Montgomery County parks system that the race showcases. Created by the Montgomery County Road Runners Club (MCRRC), the event showcases one of the most extensive metropolitan parks systems in the country while providing runners with a competitive, top-notch race.
PLEASE NOTE WE HAVE A NEW COURSE IN 2017 AND A NEW START TIME. WE NOW START AT 6:45AM!
As many local runners may be aware the State of Maryland in looking to put a light rail system in place connecting Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties. This venture is referred to as the Purple Line. If the Line is approved the final 2 miles of the traditional Parks Half Marathon (Georgetown Branch Trail) course will no longer be available, including our finish area at Elm Street Park. While this project is still pending approval our permitting process for this race is extensive and time sensitive. We cannot wait and take a chance of the project being approved in late August. At that point we would be left without a course and thus without a race.
Therefore, in order to secure permits from all of our agencies and develop a traffic and safety plan in a timely manner, we began working on a new course contingency earlier this year. I have been in close contact with the Purple Line staff, with local DOT personnel, and law enforcement agencies over the past several months At this point I feel it is best to change the course beginning in 2017. If the Purple Line is approved, the trail will close immediately. A link is posted for you to review the new course. The start and finish remain easily accessible to the Metro and the running time in Rock Creek Park has been enhanced. The final Certification process is underway and I will post that as soon as it is final. We are all very excited about the new course.
For those familiar with the “old” Pikes Peek, we will be starting on Redland RD near the railroads overpass and head toward Needwood Park. Runners will enter the Park at mile 2.1 and head toward the Hike/Biker trail and run the remainder of the race in the Park. The trail is an asphalt surface its entire length. The final .75 mile will be run directly on Beach Drive (closed to all traffic) to the finish near Grosvenor Lane. The finish festival will be directly on Beach Drive north of Grosvenor Lane. Over the next few months I will be posting updates and additional communication to this site and the Parks Facebook Page.
Please read the tabs within the website carefully as they have been updated with new information for runners, neighbors and spectators. Any questions can be e-mailed to me directly at: email@example.com.
Thank you for your participation. We are looking forward to an exciting race this year!
